Nestor

Nestor is a PC/AT compatible that I'm using as an AFPD and CIFS (SMB) file server, Web server, mail server, network router, Internet gateway, and general utility platform. I bought its mainboard, CPU and RAM from a cousin when he upgraded his system, and then purchased additional hard disk drives, case and power supply, network interface card, and floppy disk drive to actually make it go.

You can normally reach Nestor on the Internet by the DNS name ripples.dyndns.org. This is probably an opportune moment to put in a plug for Dynamic DNS Network Services.

Hardware

Nestor has the following hardware, as if you’re interested:

CPU: 350 MHz AMD K6-2, on a Gigabyte GA5AX512 100 MHz FSB mainboard
Memory: 64 MB PC-100 SD-RAM
Storage:
- 10 GB Seagate ST310212A Ultra-DMA internal IDE hard disk
- 2 × 20 GB Seagate ST320414A Ultra-DMA internal IDE hard disks (in a striped configuration using NetBSD's ccd and raid drivers)
Networking:
- X-Net 9004HC 10baseT/100baseT PCI Ethernet hub card (RealTek RTL8139 chipset)
- 10base2/10baseT PCI Ethernet NIC (RealTek RTL8029 chipset)
- 10base2/10baseT PCI Ethernet NIC (RealTek RTL8029 chipset)
- Nokia M1122 ADSL router

Operating System

Nestor exclusively runs the NetBSD/i386 1.5 operating system. Well, OK, I might boot off an MS-DOS or Linux floppy if I'm having problems installing new hardware…
